A professional may have laid out your lawn. This was done well, and it looks beautiful. But now it’s up to you: keeping your new lawn in good condition! Good maintenance not only extends the life of your lawn, it also keeps the grass greener and you have less trouble with moss and weeds. How exactly to maintain your lawn is to be found here.
Planning and tools
Make an annual schedule for your lawn. This may sound exaggerated, but if you keep to the schedule you will get a beautiful lawn in return. This way you can be sure that you don’t forget anything and that it’s your turn to do something.
In addition, always use good, clean tools. Sharp blades on the lawnmower or scarifier. A good shovel and rake make the work much easier. Moreover, clean tools ensure that you do not contribute to the spread of disease. With these tools, for example, lawn weeds will be easier to remove. You can also use tools like moss killers or grass seeds to help maintain your lawn.
Prevention is better than cure
Prevention is better than cure. This certainly also applies to your lawn, so try to prevent moss growth and bald spots by keeping your lawn well trimmed. That means intervening on time when necessary. Do not fertilise too much or too little, or sprinkle lime. But also remove weeds, branches and leaves when necessary. Water and drain when the lawn needs it. This can be done with your annual plan so that it does not take up too much time.
Scarifying
Scarifying is the removal of the thatch layer that grows in the lawn, using a scarifying rake or a scarifier. This means removing moss, weeds and dead grasses in the lawn. This improves the absorption of air, water and nutrients, and your lawn will visibly revive. Scarifying is done in the spring (March – April) and in the autumn: in September or October. Before scarifying, it is necessary to mowe to lawn short, so you can remove moss and thatch more easily. Felt is a suffocating layer that forms at the bottom of your lawn and makes it difficult for nutrition and water to penetrate. After scarifying, it is important to help your lawn recover by maintaining it even better now. Water it at the right moments, help it with lawn feed or something similar and mowe it when necessary.
